The Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova has been chosen as best looking female athlete of 2006 by the prestigious Sports Illustrated magazine.

Second place went to American volleyball player Gabrielle Reece and third place to another Russian tennis player, famous Anna Kournikova(although she hasn't been competing for 4 years now).

The top 20 is almost entirely made up of Russian and American girls, including another two tennis players, Daniela Hantuchova and Anastasia Mishkina, but also athletes, skaters, surfers or swimmers.

Maria Sharapova has also recently been declared most elegant athlete by Vogue magazine.

The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, a movie directed by Romanian Cristi Puiu, proved to be the surprise choice film of the year for many independent film critics.

The Romanian production topped the Indiewire Critics Poll, and can be found in many top 10's for foreign movies of the year, despite a mere $80,000 box-office gross. Poor marketing strategy, people too lazy to watch movies with subtitles, who knows?

Second feature film for Cristi Puiu

Only the second feature film of the director, it's the story of the final hours of an old man, who calls an ambulance, complaining of headaches and stomachaches. He is then carried from doctor to doctor, and from hospital to hospital, as his condition worsens and until there is nothing that can be done for him.

The movie is full of bleak humor, a satire against a health system paralysed by bureaucracy and the incompetence or indifference of the medical staff.

If you have the occasion to see this movie, i strongly encourage you to do so. You will be surprised by its realism and it will make you think about the frailty of all of our lives.

Actress Nicole Kidman has reunited with her husband, country star Kieth Urban, for the Winter Holidays, after the singer has spent the last two months in an alcohol treatment and rehabiliation clinic.

Kidman has been in Australia since before Christmas, working on a new movie. The two appeared together at a private screening in Sidney, on Wednesday.

The two have been seen holding hands and looking very happy as they exited the United International Pictures Office.

This was the first time Keith Urban visited Australia since June, when the couple married. He released his latest album, Love, Pain, and the whole crazy thing, last month.

This year, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban were one of the couples who went through a lot of turmoil, due to his alcohol addiction.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt stopped for Christmas in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose, to visit Colombian refugees. This was Angelina Jolie's first visit to the region as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR refugee agency, since 2002, when she went to Ecuador.

Along with Brad Pitt, she visited a number of small businesses set up by the refugees, with the help of micro-loans from the UN agency.

Three million people have been displaced for Colombia, victims of the on-going armed conflict in the country. 10,000 of them live in Costa Rica.

Angelina Jolie declared she was shocked that such a tragedy could go on, year after year, and be ignored by the rest of the world. The Oscar-award winning actress thanked the Costa Rican government for the support given to the refugees.

Since approaching the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001, Angelina Jolie has been involved in many humanitarian actions across the globe.

The star from Tomb Raider has visited around 20 countries, including Ivory Coast, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Lebanon or India. She is an active participant in the World Refugee Day, on 20th of June each year, hosting public events and speaking to the media.

As an acknowledgment for all her work, in 2005, Angelina Jolie was awarded the Global Humanitarian Action Award, from the UN Association of the USA and the Business Council of the UN.
